The Story of Spitzfeder

Curious about what once was.

Spitzfeder was born from the desire to read old letters and documents from my own family history. I was particularly captivated by the story of my great-great-grandfather Jacob Högemann. As captain of the sailing ship Stella, he sank in 1892 on a voyage from New York to London. Shortly before his departure, he sent a letter to his son. I was determined to find out what his last words were. The idea of creating Spitzfeder was born.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kurrent is the historic German cursive script that was used in German-speaking countries from the 16th to the mid-20th century. It differs significantly from modern Latin cursive and is difficult to read for the untrained eye. The known variant is the Sütterlin script, which was taught in German schools from 1915.
No, Spitzfeder is designed for absolute beginners. The course starts with the simplest letters and progresses systematically. Each lection builds on the previous one, so you gradually learn all the letters and special features of the Kurrent script.
Spitzfeder is available for iPad and iPhone. The Android version for tablets and smartphones will be available soon.
That depends on how much you practice. The 12 lections with 181 stations are designed so that with regular practice, you can quickly read and write the most important letters and words confidently. As with any script: practice makes perfect.
Yes, a stylus is recommended. Tablet: A digital pen or stylus. An active, pressure-sensitive pen such as an Apple Pencil or S Pen is recommended, as Spitzfeder detects pen pressure and varies the stroke width accordingly. Smartphone: A passive stylus. A so-called disc stylus is recommended.
No, you don't need an account or registration. Spitzfeder works completely offline and stores your learning progress exclusively on your device. No personal data is collected, no email address is required, and nothing is transmitted to a server.
No, Spitzfeder and Transkribus serve different purposes. Transkribus is an AI-powered tool that tries to transcribe handwritten texts. Spitzfeder, on the other hand, is a learning app: it teaches you to read and write Kurrent yourself – letter by letter, word by word. Both approaches complement each other: understanding Kurrent helps you verify and correct Transkribus results.
Sütterlin is a simplified variant of the Kurrent script that was taught in German schools from 1915. The letters are written noticeably longer and more uniform. Since Sütterlin was only taught for about 30 years, Kurrent is far more common in historical sources and letters. By learning the classic Kurrent script with Spitzfeder, you can also read Sütterlin – the letter forms are very similar.
Yes, Spitzfeder works completely offline. The app requires no internet connection – neither for learning nor for saving your progress. All content, exercises and lections are available locally on your device.
